A 29-year-old man was seriously hurt when he was attacked with an axe Wednesday night, Guelph Police say.

Police say they were called to a residence on Rodgers Road around 10 p.m., in response to an altercation between two men.

They say the altercation involved a 42-year-old man hitting the 29-year-old with an axe.

The 29-year-old was taken to hospital. Though his injuries are serious, police say his life is not in danger.

The 42-year-old, Pasquale Maiorano, has been charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

During a brief court appearance Thursday, he waved to three relatives sitting in the courtroom.
