A major shake-up could be coming for Guelph Hydro.

The city confirmed Monday night that it is considering a possible sale or merger.

Mayor Cam Guthrie says the city is conducting a review of the utility because several other municipalities are considering or are conducting reviews of hydro systems to make sure they're running efficiently.

The city has also announced the creation of a website that it calls “Energizing Tomorrow.”

The site gives residents details of the initiative and allows them to provide feedback.

“I encourage everyone to become educated, informed, and engaged in the process. We want to hear from as many people as possible as we go down the path of exploring how to get the most from our energy assets,” Guthrie said.

At this point it's unclear what direction Guelph Hydro could take or how employees would be affected.

The city confirms it's considering a number of different options, including keeping things the same, a possible merger, or even an acquisition or sale.

“All we're doing is embarking on a journey to figure out whether or not we should keep the status quo or we should sell or merge or we should acquire. We don't know the outcome. We're just staring a journey right now,” Guthrie said.

The mayor says the evaluation will have no impact on taxpayers.

A committee will report back to council with recommendations by early next year.
