The fire that killed 43 racehorses at a stable in Puslinch had an electrical cause, investigators have concluded.

It was late on the night of Jan. 4 when flames broke out at Classy Lane Stables

Firefighters coming in from places like Cambridge, Guelph and Hamilton were able to see flames and smoke from several kilometres away as they made their way to the stable.

In the end, one of the horse barns was destroyed by the flames. The horses kept inside the barn were regulars on tracks at places like Mohawk, Woodbine and Flamboro Downs.

Jason Benn, who was Puslinch’s chief fire prevention officer at the time of the fire, says the Office of the Fire Marshal has determined that the fire was caused by an electrical issue related to an item in the northeast corner of the stable.

“The OFM was unable to say exactly what the electrical item was, due to extent of the damage,” he said in an email.

A new stable has since been built at Classy Lane, with more fire prevention, detection and suppression systems than were present in the one that burned down.
