Following two of the worst seasons in team history, the Guelph Storm are reaching back into their past for a new head coach and general manager.
The team announced Monday that George Burnett will be behind the bench for the 2017-18 season, while also serving as the team’s GM.
He will replace current GM Mike Kelly, who announced in February that he would step down this spring, and head coach Jarrod Skalde, whose departure was announced earlier this month.
Burnett was Guelph’s head coach for the 1997-98 season, during which they won the Ontario Hockey League championship.
He is a two-time OHL coach of the year, is sixth on the list of the league’s all-time winningest coaches, and most recently served as general manager of the Flint Firebirds.
The Storm finished the past two seasons in last place in the OHL’s Western Conference, with their two lowest point totals since 1991-92 – their first season in the league.
