A police firearm was discharged in Guelph during a foot chase Thursday. Police said the gun went off as an officer was attempting to put the weapon back in its holster.

Police said plainclothes officers were involved in a drug investigation in the area of Grange Road and Starwood Drive at around 7:30 p.m., when one of them attempted to arrest a suspect.

"He immediately fled from police and there was a foot pursuit that took place," said Const. Mike Gatto.

During the chase, but before the officer arrested the suspect, the weapon fired directly into the ground, according to police. No one was hurt and no property was damaged.

"We heard a gunshot and then someone yelling ‘get down on the ground,’" said bystander Ben Vansteenbergen.

The suspect was arrested by other officers a short time later. The 23-year-old man faces a number of drug related charges. Police said he was found with $350 worth of heroin.

Neighbours in the area say the incident has left them feeling uneasy.

"I heard people just running and screaming back here, and then all of a sudden a huge bang," said Amy Rojmanh. "I never want to have to hear a gunshot again."

Aimee Sutton had questions: "How do you accidentally shoot a gun? There's a safety protocol for them right?”

Officers receive at least 13 weeks of training in firearm use and safety, according to Gatto.

Police said the firearm has been taken out of service for examination and the incident will be investigated.

The officer is continuing with his regular duties.
