The main highway through the community of Clifford was closed for several hours Friday.

The owner of a business located on Highway 9 in Clifford, told CTV News late in the afternoon that police had asked people to stay off the street due to an incident they were investigating.

Earlier in the day, she said, officers wearing fatigues and carrying rifle-style guns had been seen in the area.

According to the Ontario Provincial Police, the police presence was due to a man threatening to harm himself.

One man was taken into custody and charges were pending, police said.

The highway reopened around 6:30 p.m.
