A man stole a cellphone and managed to elude the police officers searching for him, Guelph Police say.

It happened late Tuesday night while the alleged victim was walking on Neeve Street.

According to police, he was approached by a man he did not recognize who asked him for a cigarette, then assaulted him and grabbed his phone.

Police describe the thief as being a six-foot-tall, thin white man with short, curly brown hair. He was seen wearing a black jacket.
