Guelph General Hospital will soon have mental health nurses working at all hours of the day, as well as more addictions counsellors in the building.

At hospitals in Wellington County, meanwhile, patients will be able to undergo health assessments during evening, weekend and holiday hours.

Health Minister Eric Hoskins visited Guelph Thursday to announce more than $6 million in health-related funding, including more than $3 million for initiatives specifically geared to mental health.

Guelph General Hospital will receive more than $2.4 million for mental health projects, while Groves Memorial Community Hospital in Fergus and the North Wellington Health Care Corporation will each get a little more than $325,000.

The province has allocated $138 million to be spent over three years on improving community-based mental health services.
