Permit applications for the province's first high-occupancy toll (HOT) lanes can be submitted online beginning on Monday.

Officials say the applications at Ontario.ca/HOTLanes can be made until August 21st.

The pilot project to ease congestion begins in September when the existing high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes on the QEW will be designated as high-occupancy toll lanes.

HOT lanes will launch on 16.5 km of the QEW, in both directions, from Trafalgar Road in Oakville to Guelph Line in Burlington.

The Ministry of Transportation website says, this pilot project will last two to four years. The goal to help officials learn about and plan for a more efficient highway network in Ontario.

Single occupant drivers will have the option to apply for a permit, while carpools of two or more will still be able to use these lanes for free.
