A pilot was taken to hospital Tuesday morning after crashing a small aircraft at the Guelph Airpark.

The crash occurred around 10 a.m.

According to the Wellington County OPP, the “homebuilt Cessna” was being piloted by a 74-year-old man from Mississauga.

“(He) was attempting to take off when he realized he was in the taxi lane,” said Const. Cheri Rockefeller.

“He immediately veered to the right, and collided with the wooden guardrail.”

The plane stayed upright, but ended up against the guardrail separating the airstrip from a parking lot.

The pilot’s injuries are believed to be minor. His aircraft received significant front-end damage.

Authorities notified the Transportation Safety Board, which police say will not be sending out an inspector because it does not investigate incidents involving homebuilt aircraft.

The Guelph Airpark is located on Skyway Drive, off Highway 7 just east of Guelph’s city limits.
