The province announced millions of dollars in funding for a number of southern Ontario infrastructure projects on Friday – including $2.2 million for a bridge in Fergus.

The St. David Street bridge has been in need of refurbishment for years.

Officials in Centre Wellington voiced concern about its state in 2014, when changes to provincial funding were believed to leave the township having to foot the entire bill for the bridge’s repair.

Friday’s announcement makes it clear that won’t be the case.

“This is wonderful news for Centre Wellington,” Mayor Kelly Linton said in a statement.

“This investment … will help reconstruct a major transportation corridor through downtown Fergus.”

The St. David Street bridge forms part of Highway 6.
