A major shake-up could be coming for Guelph Hydro.

The company is funded by its ratepayers and has been providing electricity in Guelph for more than a century – however councillors have decided it’s time to look at other options, including a possible sale.

“It’s the right time to look at all options and all options are on the table with no predetermined outcome,” says Cam Guthrie, Mayor of Guelph.

Earlier this week, Guelph council formed a committee made up of energy experts and community members to look at how the city gets its electricity moving forward.

There will be a public consultation before any recommendations are brought forth to council in early 2017.

“It’s a quickly changing energy world and Guelph needs to be on top of that particular issue,” says Phil Allt, board member for Guelph Hydro.

Guelph Hydro currently employs nearly 130 people – and while the future looks uncertain for those employees, Guthrie says they should not be concerned.

“I think they should keep their ears to the ground and understand that over the next year, we are going to be holding hearings,” says Guthrie.

The city has also announced the creation of a website that it calls “Energizing Tomorrow.”

The site gives residents details of the initiative and allows them to provide feedback.
