The Guelph-Eramosa Fire Department was back on the Third Line near Rockwood Wednesday morning after a fire at a second abandoned house.

When the fire department arrived at the scene, the fire had spread to the second floor but they were able to contain the flames and save the home.

Last Friday, another abandoned home burned to the ground on the same stretch of road. Police are treating both fires as suspicious.

“We need to determine what the cause is for this fire and also at the other home,” says Wellington County OPP Const. Bob Bartolato. “It’s still early, and we are looking at the investigation thoroughly, and it does take time.”

The fire department says both properties are owned by the same person.

“The fact that someone is going around and doing this is kind of scary,” says James Dean, a trainer at a horse farm in the area. “We’ve got live animals in here. The fact that somebody is around here doing stuff like that is worrisome.”

Alex Lush lives and works in the area. He noticed some parts were missing from a couple of his tractors the morning of the first fire.

“I’m presuming there is a connection between what happened here and the fire across the road,” says Lush, who works at Connect Equipment. “I’m very concerned and nervous about what’s going to happen next.”
