The Special Olympics got underway last night at the Sleeman Centre.

Thousands of people packed the arena in Guelph, after athletes ran the torch from the U of G’s Johnston Green to the downtown building, lighting the flame to official start the spring games.

Around 900 athletes and almost 2000 family, friends and volunteers will be in Guelph over the next several days.

Competitors are in the city from all over the province and range in ages from 8 years old to 70 years of age.

Friday’s schedule of events is jammed packed with basketball, bowling , powerlifting, rhythmic gymnastics and swimming.
