A University of Guelph student claims she was assaulted for wearing a hat in support of United States president-elect Donald Trump.
In a post on the ‘Overheard in Guelph’ Facebook page, Emily Markoski claims the hat – which bears the words ‘Make America Great Again’ – was knocked off her head when she was “smacked” in the school cafeteria.
“Sorry you don't agree with me on politics. But I don't go around hitting people when I don't like something about them,” she wrote.
Markoski says it happened the day after Trump’s electoral victory, and was wearing the hat to show her support of the president-elect.
After the incident, she registered a complaint with campus police.
Brenda Whiteside, the school’s associate vice-president of student affairs, says Trump’s electoral win has prompted emotional responses on-campus, but also provided students to talk about racism and other issues.
“(We’re) recognizing that there is increased anxiety on campus around the election,” she said.
Markoski declined a request from CTV News to be interviewed for this story.
