The canine unit was called out Wednesday night to help track down a suspect who attempted to avoid arrest in Guelph.

Around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, a Guelph police officer spotted a power-assisted bicycle travelling at an excessive speed on Gordon Street near Kortright Road.  As the cruiser came up behind the bike, the driver failed to stop at a stop light making a turn.  The officer turned on the siren and roof lights.

The bike left the roadway and sped down the sidewalk, eventually turning onto a pedestrian walkway.  Police say a number of people were on the path, walking their dogs.  The rider continued down the path, eventually dumping the bike and running away on foot into a nearby green-space.

The suspect was tracked down after a brief search, with the assistance of the canine unit.

A 32-year-old man is facing charges including dangerous driving, possession of stolen property and breach of probation
