Dozens of the world’s top athletes were in Guelph Wednesday for a track and field meet.

More than 20 Olympians and Paralympians were competing amongst local athletes at Alumni Stadium in the 2017 Speed River Inferno.

The European-style meet is the second stop on this year’s national track league schedule.

A number of events were held including the men’s and women’s 1,500 metre races, hurdles, long jump, and pole vault. The evening culminated with the Canadian men’s and women’s 10,000 metre championships.

Organizers say it’s a chance to showcase the city and highlight local athletes.

The meet is the main event in the Speed River Inferno Track and Field Festival.
