A plot of farmland in southeast Guelph could eventually become the city’s newest high school.

The Upper Grand District School Board is asking the province to fund the 1,200-student school, which would be built at the corner of Victoria and Arkell roads.

School board officials say the city currently has more than 400 more high school students than its schools are meant to accommodate, and that number is expected to grow to 1,200 by 2023.

The board has asked for funding for the school in each of the past two years, and been turned down both times.

Guelph has not seen a new high school built since the 1960s.
