N.B. man faces assault, weapons charges after armed standoff with police in York County

A man is facing assault and weapons charges after he was allegedly involved in a seven-hour armed standoff with police in New Brunswick’s York County last week.

The RCMP responded to a report of a disturbance near the 3000 block of Route 3 in York Mills, N.B., around 8:45 a.m. on June 6. Police say the responding officers found an intoxicated man causing a disturbance outside a home.

“He began to approach police with an edged weapon, at which point a conductive energy weapon (taser) was unsuccessfully deployed by police,” said the RCMP in a news release Friday.

“The man then proceeded to enter the residence, where he barricaded himself inside before displaying a firearm to police officers.”

Police contained the area and several other RCMP units, including the Emergency Response Team, Police Dog Services and a crisis negotiator, were called to the scene.

The RCMP says members of the Emergency Response Team arrested the man inside the home around 4 p.m.

Jeremy Drysdale, 47, of Harvey, N.B., is facing the following charges:

• pointing a firearm
• possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
• assault with a weapon
• uttering threats
• resisting and obstructing a police officer
• mischief under $5,000

Drysdale appeared in Fredericton provincial court on Monday. He was remanded into custody and is due back in court for a bail hearing via tele-remand on June 25.

“The incident did not meet the criteria for an Alert Ready; however, the New Brunswick RCMP is always prepared to issue an Alert Ready should there be a need,” the RCMP added.

The investigation is ongoing.
