New Brunswick spring legislative session wraps up

MLAs are heading home as the New Brunswick legislature wraps up its spring session.

New Brunswick’s Legislative Assembly has concluded its spring sitting with 27 bills passing.

The legislation includes changes to the property tax system, the creation of a consumer advocate for energy and a bill to streamline the mining approval process.

“This has been the most productive session New Brunswick has seen,” Premier Susan Holt said during question period.

“Twenty-seven pieces of legislation passed that are going to make a real difference in people’s lives,” she added.

But opposition leader Glen Savoie said he wants more data to back up whether the Liberals’ policies are working.

“The reality is that New Brunswickers are not feeling the benefit,” he said in a scrum.

The session is his last as interim Progressive Conservative leader as the party is set to elect a new leader before next fall’s October sitting.

Savoie said he’s ready to support the new leader as an MLA, whoever they will be.

“If we’re listening to people, if we’re bringing out ideas, bringing ideas forward that help people in this province, that’s what we’re called to do,” he said.
