Cape Breton woman charged after nearly hitting police vehicles while fleeing in stolen truck: RCMP

A 36-year-old woman from Scotchtown, N.S., faces multiple charges after allegedly fleeing from police in a stolen truck.

RCMP say she drove the grey Chevrolet Silverado “dangerously through two counties, and nearly struck police vehicles.”

An officer initially spotted the vehicle on June 23 around 1:35 p.m. It had been reported stolen and was travelling southbound on Highway 344 in Aulds Cove.

According to a news release, two officers conducted a traffic stop “when the driver, after pulling over, reversed the truck toward a police car and fled at a high rate of speed.”

The truck then travelled eastbound on Highway 104, reportedly weaving into oncoming vehicles.

“After becoming stuck in traffic near the Canso Causeway, the driver again reversed and backed along the highway in the wrong direction, nearly striking another police vehicle,” says RCMP.

They note they did not pursue the truck in the interest of public safety.

Around 1:40 p.m., officers got a 911 call reporting a grey truck travelling toward Antigonish at a high speed and passing vehicles in the oncoming lane on Highway 104. They patrolled the area but were unable to locate the truck.

Antigonish County District RCMP found and arrested the driver on the Old Mulgrave Road around 8:30 p.m.

Tanya Marie Young has been charged with:

• dangerous operation of a vehicle
• flight from police
• possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
• assault on police officer with a weapon

Young is also facing charges in relation to breaches of a release order. She was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in Antigonish provincial court on July 15.
