One person sent to hospital following Halifax house fire

One person suffered smoke inhalation after a morning fire in Halifax.

An early more fire in Halifax sent one person to hospital and forced six others out of their homes.

Emergency crews responded to the scene on Charles Street near Windsor Street just after 7 a.m.

Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency said the blaze was concentrated in the back of a large house converted into four apartments.

District Chief Kevin Corkum told CTV News the fire started in the back of the building and moved into apartments on the first and second floors.

Extensive damage could be seen on a top floor deck.

The two units in the back of the structure sustained fire, smoke and water damage.

Corkum says the two units at the front of the building received smoke damage.

In all, 35 firefighters were on scene, with nine vehicles.

The fire was deemed under control by 8 a.m., and the scene cleared around 10 a.m.

The tenant taken to hospital was suffering from smoke inhalation. The six other tenants were assessed but didn’t need medical assistance.

The firefighters’ union initially said no one was hurt, but the fire department later clarified the injuries.

Firefighters also reportedly rescued a cat from the home.

District Chief Corkum said once the scene was cleared by crews, investigators took over to try and determine the cause of the fire.
