S&P/TSX composite down in late-morning trading, U.S. stocks also fall

TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index fell in late-morning trading weighed down by losses in the financial and base metal sectors, while U.S. stock markets also moved lower.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 73.83 points at 35,231.48.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 86.53 points at 52,550.48. The S&P 500 index was down 28.36 points at 7,547.03, while the Nasdaq composite was down 223.38 points at 26,058.23.

The Canadian dollar traded for 70.72 cents US compared with 70.69 cents US on Friday.

The August crude oil contract was up US$3.24 at US$74.65 per barrel.

The August gold contract was down US$94.00 at US$4,019.70 an ounce.
