Guns seized after vehicle, homes searched in Calgary organized crime investigation

Police say two handguns were seized and one man was arrested during the search of a vehicle and two homes in northeast Calgary last month.

Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) says the search was carried out by its organized crime team, with help from Calgary police, on April 16.

While searching the vehicle, ALERT found not only the guns, but magazines, ammunition and shell casings.

One of the handguns had its serial number defaced and the other had been reported as stolen in Manitoba, ALERT said.

The handguns and shell casings are being analyzed by forensic teams to determine if they were used in any other crimes.

Police also searched two homes, one in the community of Saddle Ridge and the other in Horizon.

Ikjot Sidhu, 19, is facing multiple weapons-related charges.

He was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court on May 29.

“Gun violence is a serious public safety issue that impacts Calgary and other communities across the province,” said Staff Sgt. Ryan Smart in a Wednesday news release.

“ALERT works closely with our partners at the Calgary Police Service to share intelligence and take illegal firearms off the street.”
