Lethbridge police launch body-worn cameras starting June 15

Lethbridge Police Service is introducing body-worn cameras to record interactions with the public, aiming to improve accountability and transparency.

Members of the Lethbridge Police Service will use body-worn cameras to record their interactions with the public starting Monday.

The phased rollout starts with nine officers – eight on patrol teams and one traffic member –testing the new equipment over the next four weeks.

The police service has acquired a total of 165 Axon Public Safety Canada cameras.

Chief Shahin Mehdizadeh says body-worn cameras give the public greater confidence in how police serve the community by increasing transparency.

“At its core, this program reinforces our commitment to accountability and supports safer interactions for the public and our officers by providing a clear record of what occurred while respecting privacy and the law,” Mehdizadeh said.

Aside from providing an objecting recording of police actions, the technology also enhances evidence collection and can help expedite investigations.

“The implementation of body-worn cameras is mandated by the Government of Alberta for all police services across the province,” said a Friday news release from LPS.

Officials say all uniformed officers, including Community Peace Officers, will be equipped with body-worn cameras by the end of the year.

Plain-clothed officers will also have access to body-worn cameras in the course of their duties.

“When safe and practicable, officers will advise individuals they are being recorded but notification is not required,” LPS said. “When the camera’s red light is activated, recording is in progress.”

The annual cost to operate the cameras is estimated to be up to $950,000.
