Surge replace coach in bid to right the ship after sinking to 0-7 to start CEBL season

Dave DeAveiro was named the new head coach of the Calgary Surge earlier this week when the club fired head coach Perry Huang after an 0-7 start.

The Surge are on their second coach of the season as they continue to search for their first win.

The Surge parted ways with head coach Perry Huang earlier this week After starting the season 0-7.

Taking over from Huang on an interim basis is Dave DeAveiro who has a wealth of experience. DeAveiro is just back from Mexico where he helped Canada’s U18 team beat the U.S. to win a gold medal.

It’s still early, but Wednesday night’s game at WinSport against the Saskatoon Mamba is as close to a must-win as a team can get in its eighth game of the year, DeAveiro said in an interview with CTV News.

“We’re at a point now where we’ve got to get some W’s,” DeAveiro said. “We’ve got to build some spirit and character here and get our fans excited about our team.”

The players are approaching Wednesday night’s game with the same mentality.

“Every game is a must-win for us,” Sean “Rugzy” Miller-Moore said. “That’s how we look at every single game. Even from when we were 0-4 or 0-5 we were looking at it as a must-win game -- but for sure today is a must-win game. We have the home crowd on our side so hopefully we can come home and give them a win.”

Those sentiments were echoed by guard Evan Gilyard II.

“I think every game is a must-win game,” Gilyard said . “Especially from here on out. It’s definitely important for us to come out here with the right mindset -- have our hard hat on and be willing to do the dirty work and play as a teama nd have a full, complete game so we can get a win.”

The Surge also announced the signing of forward Deandre Williams, a 6′9 forward from Houston on Wednesday.

Tip-off for Wednesday night’s game against the Mamba is 7:30 p.m. at Markin McPhail Centre at WinSport.
