Ottawa’s biggest treasure hunt is back: The Great Glebe Garage Sale

The Glebe was once again transformed into a treasure hunter’s dream as thousands packed the Ottawa neighbourhood. CTV’s Camille Wilson reports.

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure, especially when it comes to Ottawa’s biggest sidewalk sale.

The Great Glebe Garage Sale returned for another year on Saturday, drawing bargain hunters from all over the city.

The popular event has been an annual community festival held the fourth Saturday in May since 1986.

Hundreds of Glebe residents were out selling their things from their driveways, sidewalks, porches and front lawns, selling their once loved items to new homes.

“I think it’s really a lovely thing because it does bring people out in the community. It kind of helps, reduce, reuse, recycle,” said shopper Ania Kolbuszewska.

Residents say it’s an event that cannot be missed and makes for a neighborhood family reunion.

“This is my first time actually being a vendor here at the Great Glebe garage sale. The people here are super nice. For me, it’s more about the community aspect of it,” said Taz Khan, a Glebe resident.

“It’s just a great way of being connected to the community and a great way of helping other people out as well and recycling. You can’t really get more Canadian than that.”

Some even travelled to get their hands on some of the bargains.

“Everyone comes around with cash. It’s last place you can use a quarter,” said David Garfinkle, a shopper from Montreal.

“I never miss a garage sale. I grew up in the Glebe and I come back every year.”

The community sale attracts thousands of people every year with shoppers having the opportunity to buy clothes, household goods and art.

This tradition isn’t only about doing a spring clean up of the house, it’s also for a good cause.

It urges vendors to donate some of their proceeds to the Ottawa Food Bank.
