Jonathan Wilkinson, a former Liberal Cabinet Minister made a stop to the Queen City Thursday, to show support and campaign alongside Liberal candidate for Regina-Wascana Jeff Walters.
Officials with Walters’ campaign office, located on Park Street, told CTV News the pair spent much of the day Thursday door knocking and talking to supporters.
Walters said the polls are neck and neck right now between the Conservatives and the Liberals and this experience for him has been nothing short of amazing.
“It’s been quite the experience. We’ve got to do stuff that I never thought we’d be able to do. Your vote really does matter this time,” Walters said.
They then showed up at the office to meet with volunteers and supporters there.
Wilkinson grew up in Saskatchewan and he said it’s great to be home.
“I grew up here. I worked for the provincial government for a number of years. It’s great to be here,” Wilkinson explained.
Despite party leaders having made stops to Saskatoon, Wilkinson is the only member of the former federal cabinet who has made a stop in Regina.
“I think it’s important that the political leaders of all stripes are in Saskatchewan. It’s important to hear the views, the aspirations of and the concerns of people who live in Saskatchewan. I think it’s good that they were all at least in Saskatoon but of course Regina is different,” Wilkinson explained.
Both Walters and Wilkinson hope to see another Liberal government take office.
“We have these things in place that are good for people that we’re going to expand. There are other ideas such as affordable housing. It was Mark Carney of being an expert in economics with us in particular at this time, he’s the person for the time,” Walters said.
“There is nobody in this country that is more qualified than Mark Carney who has been a senior public servant and a senior person in the private second. I would contrast that with the alternative which is Mr. Poilievre who is a career politician, has never worked a day in the private sector and never worked today in the senior levels of the public service,” Wilkinson said.
No matter who takes office, Walters said he is grateful for a good campaign run and everyone who has supported him.
