‘The allegations are serious’: Three Toronto cops facing charges in Barcelona

Three Toronto police officers on vacation and not travelling in official capacity have been arrested in Barcelona.

Toronto police say three off-duty officers are facing charges in Barcelona following “serious” allegations made against them.

In an email to CTV News, a spokesperson for the Toronto Police Service (TPS) said the officers were vacationing in Spain at the time and not travelling in any official capacity.

“The allegations are serious. On arrival in Canada, one officer was suspended from duty as authorized by the Chief of Police in accordance with the Community Safety and Policing Act (CSPA). The two other officers will also be suspended upon their return to Canada in the coming days,” the TPS spokesperson said.

Details of the incident that preceded the charges being laid, as well as the charges themselves, were not released. CTV News Toronto has reached out to local Spanish police for more information.

In a separate statement, the Toronto Police Association said it was aware of the incident involving three of its members, but provided no further details.

“Given these charges relate to an off-duty incident, the Toronto Police Association has no further comment,” they said.

The names of the officers involved were not released.
