Were you on these two flights or at Pearson Airport on Tuesday? You may have been exposed to measles

Public health officials in Peel Region are notifying the public about a possible measles exposure on two recent flights and at Toronto Pearson International Airport.

Anyone who was on Flight BG305 from Bangladesh to Toronto via Rome and AC1986 from Toronto to Moncton on July 7 may have been exposed to the highly contagious virus, Peel Public Health said.

Those who were at the two airport terminals on the same day between 1:11 p.m. and 11:45 p.m. are also being advised to watch for measles symptoms, which include fever, runny nose, cough, red eyes, a red rash that begins on the face and spreads down the body and small blue-white spots (Koplik spots) that can appear on the inside of the mouth and throat.

The virus spreads through the air when an infected person breathes, coughs, sneezes or talks.

“Although the overall risk of measles is low in Peel, it can spread quickly, especially among people who are not yet fully protected,” Dr. Atiba Nelson, Peel Public Health’s associate medical officer of health, said on Friday.

Peel Public Health is advising those who may have been exposed to check their immunization record and contact their health care provider if symptoms develop.

As of June 23, there are 27 measles cases in the province this year, two of which were in Peel Region.
