Extortion suspected after shots fired at Surrey, B.C., home overnight

Authorities are investigating another shooting in Surrey, B.C., that appears to be related to the ongoing rash of extortions.

The latest gunfire targeted a home near King George Boulevard and 88 Avenue around 12:40 a.m. Wednesday, the Surrey Police Service said in a news release.

“Police quickly confirmed that none of the occupants of the home were injured,” the department said. “The residence was damaged, and bullet casings were observed outside.”

While the motive has not been confirmed, police said they believe the shooting was extortion related.

Authorities have boasted progress tackling the plague of extortions in the city since the start of the year.

There were 44 extortion threats reported in January and 10 extortion-related shootings, according to police. That dropped to 14 threats in March and three shootings.

Last year the City of Surrey put up a $250,000 reward fund for information leading to convictions in extortion cases.
