Vancouver announces details of one-night fireworks show

A date, time and location have been chosen for a one-night fireworks show in Vancouver this summer, following a vote earlier this year that approved spending $2 million in taxpayer funds to make it happen.

The “Summer Lights” fireworks are set for English Bay on Friday, July 31, the city announced in a statement Tuesday.

“Summer Lights in English Bay is about bringing people together for a spectacular evening in one of Vancouver’s most iconic settings,” said Mayor Ken Sim, in the statement.

“This is a free, welcoming celebration for residents, families and visitors to enjoy during what will be an extraordinary summer for our city.”

In February, the mayor tabled a motion seeking funding for the one-night event after the Celebration of Light was called off by organizers.

It was approved along party lines with Sim’s ABC majority describing the money being spent as a modest investment to save a beloved tradition while opponents characterized it as a questionable expense and political ploy.
