Manitoba weather: Spring has sprung across the province

Spring has sprung in Manitoba and northwestern Ontario on Friday.

With the arrival of the spring, or vernal equinox, as it’s also known, the most direct rays of the sun move north of the equator.

Temperatures are slightly above normal in Winnipeg and across the south on Friday. However, unsettled weather is continuing across the Prairies, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC).

That said, conditions on Friday afternoon are pleasant, although rain boots and windshield wiper fluid are good things to have on hand. Mild temperatures are causing some melting and big puddles.

The weather agency said a clipper system will enter Manitoba on Friday evening, with the highest snowfall amounts, five to 10 centimetres, expected just north of the Yellowhead Highway and parts of the northern Red River Valley.

Along with snow, the low will also bring rain, and, possibly, freezing rain to much of the south. Rain and snow are expected in Winnipeg by late Friday night.

Overnight lows will drop to around the freezing mark in many southern regions, including Winnipeg and Brandon, so roads and highways could become slippery.

Rain or light snow could continue on Saturday morning, before winding down by the afternoon in Winnipeg. Temperatures will remain steady during the day around the freezing mark.

Sunday will be slightly cooler, but brighter with a mix of sun and cloud.

Meanwhile, another system is bringing snow to northern regions on Friday. ECCC said a band of five to 10 centimetres is expected by Friday evening, although the agency’s forecast amounts for most regions are closer to two to four centimetres.
