Manitoba weather: Spring snow coming to parts of province

If you live in Manitoba, you know that springtime snow is a given.

A significant snowfall awaits some southern regions of the province on Wednesday.

Before it arrives, a less potent system will bring another round of snow to central regions on Tuesday, after the same areas saw snow on Monday.

Meanwhile, clouds will increase across the south throughout the day on Tuesday, ahead of the approaching stronger system.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a special weather statement for a large swath of southwestern Manitoba, including Dauphin and Riding Mountain National Park.

The weather agency said 10-15 cm of snowfall or more in higher terrain is possible, starting overnight Tuesday through overnight Wednesday, possibly into Thursday morning.

ECCC advises preparing for possible school or event cancellations, adding travel could be slow or hazardous.

Snow is also expected to reach Winnipeg, parts of southeast Manitoba and northwestern Ontario overnight Tuesday. Snowfall amounts, however, will be much less. ECCC generally forecasts two to four centimetres for Winnipeg and surrounding regions and in Ontario.

Southern Manitoba regions closer to the US border shouldn’t see much snowfall. Rather, freezing rain is possible on the southern flank of the snow falling further north.

As the snow clears out on Thursday, the sky will clear, too. A mix of sun and cloud is expected in Winnipeg ahead of even sunnier skies starting Friday through the weekend and into early next week.
