Two charged after stabbing outside ‘costume social’: Winnipeg police

Two men are facing charges in connection with a stabbing at a costume social in Winnipeg

Winnipeg police have charged two men in connection with a stabbing outside of a costume social at Glenwood Community Centre in October.

Officers were called to Overton Street around 1 a.m. on Oct. 11 after a man in his 30s was stabbed during a fight outside the St. Vital Community Centre. He was taken to hospital in unstable condition.

With the help of witness interviews and video surveillance, the Major Crimes Unit learned an altercation between a few men started inside the social, and one of the groups was asked to leave.

“A melee ensued and spilled outside into the parking lot,” police wrote in a Friday news release. “A female in her 40s attempted to intervene when she was punched and rendered unconscious.”

Police said the victim was stabbed by two men he didn’t know as the fight continued.

The suspects left before police arrived.

On Nov. 1, police executed a warrant at a home in the 300 block of Selkirk Avenue. They arrested five people and seized a loaded sawed-off shotgun.

A 29-year-old man is facing charges related to the incident at the community center, including assault with a weapon and assault causing bodily harm. He is also charged with three firearm offences and five counts of failure to comply with release order conditions. He remains behind bars.

A 20-year-old woman, a 16-year-old teenager, and two men—aged 24 and 54—are facing firearms-related charges. Police said they were all released on undertakings.

The other suspect in the stabbing—a 28-year-old man—was arrested on Nov. 29. Police said he’s charged with assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon. He was released on an undertaking.

None of the charges have been proven in court.
