Winnipeg home a complete loss after fire, one of five blazes this weekend

Winnipeg fire crews were called to five separate blazes in under 24 hours between Saturday and Sunday morning, the most significant leaving a home destroyed.

The first call came in at 8:23 a.m. Saturday for reports of smoke coming from a three-storey hotel in the 600 block of King Edward Street.

Crews said a fire broke out in one of the suites, but was extinguished by the hotel sprinkler system.

It’s believed the fire was started by combustibles being accidentally left by the cooktop.

Other parts of the hotel were damaged by water.

Then at 1:51 p.m. the WFPS was called to the 500 block of Ellice Avenue for a fire at a commercial structure.

Crews attacked the fire and were able to extinguish it quickly.

It’s believed it was started by someone who didn’t dispose of their cigarette butt properly.

The third fire was the worst of the five and happened just before 5:30 p.m.

Crews went to a home in the 800 block of Ingersoll Street. Heavy smoke was seen coming from the building, and it was deemed unsafe for firefighters to enter.

An exterior fight was started, and even though crews tried to protect two neighbouring homes, flames did spread to a second home.

Everyone was able to evacuate safely and the fires were under control by 7:27 p.m.

The city said the first home is considered a complete loss, while there was “moderate” damage to the second one.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The fourth fire happened around an hour after the third one broke out in the 600 block of Alfred Avenue.

Firefighters were called to a home that had smoke coming from inside. Crews were able to enter the building and the fire was under control by 7:23 p.m.

Firefighters did have to evacuate people from inside, but no one was hurt. The fire is under investigation.

The last fire happened Sunday morning at 12:51 a.m. at a vacant home in the 1500 block of Alexander Avenue.

No one was found inside the home and the fire was under control by 1:22 a.m. The fire is under investigation.

The city is reminding people to call 911 if they see someone entering a vacant building.
