Warnings expand in Manitoba amid ‘multi-day episode’ of extreme cold

Environment Canada expects a period of very cold wind chills in southern Manitoba.

Extreme cold warnings have expanded in the province, as Manitobans are warned to brace for frigid temperatures in the week to come.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) issued an extreme cold warning for several southwestern Manitoba communities Monday morning, which expanded in the afternoon to include much of the south, including Winnipeg and Brandon.

The weather agency said a multi-day episode of very cold wind chills is expected.

Overnight low temperatures will near -30 , with 15 to 25 km/h winds that will produce extremely cold wind chill values near minus 40 Monday night and into Tuesday morning.

ECCC said wind chills will moderate slightly during the day but will return to extreme values overnight throughout the week in portions of the province.

Manitobans are reminded to dress warmly to protect themselves from frostbite and keep pets safe from the cold.
