‘It’s the nostalgia of it’: Cherry Blossoms to be discontinued

Published:

Hershey’ Canada has decided to stop producing the Cherry Blossoms.

For some people, eating a Cherry Blossom reminds them of Christmas time.

Those who want to keep those childhood memories alive may want to stock up before it’s too late.

Hershey’s Canada is reportedly discontinuing the sweet treat, but it’s not known why or when the last ones will be available.

The chocolate with syrupy cherry inside dates back to the 1890s and has been a go-to stocking stuffer for generations.

They’ve already disappeared from the shelves of the Candy Depot in Moncton.

Store employee Josse Primeau said they sold their last one on Thursday.

“The minute we found out the news, one person came and bought them all,” said Primeau. “There was about nine or 10 (left). We had been holding on to them for quite a while before the news came out, but now people want them and love them.”

Primeau thinks people are buying them up and saving them for special occasions.

“I don’t think it’s because they love them,” said Primeau. “I think it’s the nostalgia of it. The thought of loving them. The memories might be better than the actual chocolate itself.”

Allison Duplessis stocks the candy aisle at the nearby Dollarama and said they haven’t had any for some time, but they remain in demand.

“Oh, yeah, we would sell a couple boxes a day of them, for sure,” said Duplessis. “I know a lot of people are looking for them. We still have people coming in every day asking if we have any.”

There are a few left at the Discounters next door and cashier Linda Leger said they’re a big seller.

“We’re almost out actually and we had quite a few boxes,” said Leger.

They can still be found at local gas stations and neighbourhood corner stores, but stock is dwindling.

That’s disappointing news to John Moore.

“I like them every now and then. Especially around Christmas time,” said Moore. “They taste really good.”

Gail Maxwell said her husband will certainly be disappointed, too.

“He’s a Cherry Blossom lover,” said Maxwell. “He loves cherries. He’s a big fan of cherries. He just loves them in general.”

Mona Aube likes the juice from the cherries.

“They’re just good and they’re great Christmas stocking stuffers. My husband loves them, too. They’re just great. I don’t know why they’re discontinuing them,” said Aube.

Primeau won’t be as sad to see them go.

“No, I absolutely despise them. But the chocolate is good. I must admit the chocolate is good,” said Primeau.

CTV News has reached out to Hershey’s for more information on why and when Cherry Blossoms will stop being produced.
