CTV News declares Liberals win most seats in Maritimes. Here’s a look at some key ridings

CTV News has declared the Liberal Party has won the most seats in the Maritimes in the federal election, but the Conservatives managed to hold enough ridings to stop the Liberals from sweeping the East Coast.

As of 4 p.m. Tuesday, CTV News election results show the Liberals have won 20 seats, the Conservatives have won five.

In 2015, the Liberal Party rode the red wave through the Maritimes, scoring every seat in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. They were unable to repeat that success in 2019, ceding ground to the Conservatives and the Green Party in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

The 2021 election was more of the same as the seat count remained essentially unchanged between the Liberals and the Conservatives across the three provinces.

Nova Scotia

Halifax

After more than seven months, the Halifax riding has an MP, and once again it’s a Liberal.

The Halifax riding has been without an MP since Andy Fillmore stepped down from his seat and ran for mayor of the municipality last September. Fillmore held onto the seat for the Liberals since 2015, but prior to that election the riding was historically an NDP stronghold, with electoral victories stretching back to 1997.

CTV News has declared that Shannon Miedema, who has worked as the director of environment and climate change for the City of Halifax, won the riding for the Liberals.

She beat former NDP MLA Lisa Roberts and Conservative candidate Mark Boudreau, who served on the board of trustees with the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 for eight years and was a board member of Hope Blooms for 10 years.

Central Nova

CTV News has declared Liberal candidate Sean Fraser secured his seat in Central Nova for the fourth election in a row. Fraser was first elected to Parliament along with the Liberal wave that swept the Maritimes in 2015. He secured his seat in the 2019 and 2021 elections.

Fraser announced he was stepping down from Trudeau’s cabinet and would not run for re-election last December. However, he reversed course in March and threw his hat back in the ring.

Fraser was up against a tight race to Conservative candidate Brycen Jenkins. Jenkins, 26, is a tradesman and real estate agent. He also serves as a volunteer firefighter and is involved in the Kinsmen Club.

Cape Breton-Canso-Antigonish

CTV News has declared that Liberal candidate Jaime Battiste has won the seat in the Cape Breton-Canso-Antigonish.

Battiste was one of several candidates who ran for leader of the Liberals in the wake of Justin Trudeau’s resignation earlier this year, but he quickly pulled out and endorsed Mark Carney. Battiste was the first Mi’kmaq elected to Parliament when he won the Sydney-Victoria riding in 2019.

Conservative candidate Allan MacMaster failed to capture the hotly-contested riding. Prior to this election he represented the provincial riding of Inverness as a Progressive Conservative MLA from 2009 to 2024, serving as deputy premier and minister of Finance and Treasury Board. He announced his plan to step into federal politics last October.

Prince Edward Island

Cardigan

CTV News has declared that Kent MacDonald, the president of Pondsedge Farms, has won the Cardigan, P.E.I., riding for the Liberals, continuing the party’s decades-long success in the region.

Lawrence MacAulay, who won the Cardigan riding for the Liberals in 11 straight elections since 1988, announced he wouldn’t be seeking reelection last March.

MacDonald, who has served as the director of Dairy Farmers of PEI and the director of the PEI Federation of Agriculture, stepped in as MacAulay’s replacement for the Liberals. He was able to hold onto the riding for the party.

MacDonald beat Conservative Party candidate James Aylward, who previously represented the P.E.I. Progressive Conservatives as an MLA for the Stratford-Keppoch riding, winning elections in 2011, 2015 and 2019. He was also the leader of the PCs and minister of Health and Wellness.

New Brunswick

Beauséjour

CTV News has declared that Dominic LeBlanc, who has represented the Beauséjour riding as a Liberal MP for 25 years, will be returning to Parliament as the MP for the region. He was first elected in 2000 and has served as minister of Finance, Intergovernmental Affairs and Infrastructure and Communities.

Fredericton-Oromocto

Musician David Myles stepped away from the stage and into the political ring, representing the Liberals in the Fredericton-Oromocto riding. CTV News has declared that Myles has won the riding.

Myles became the Liberal candidate for the riding after Jenica Atwin said she would not seek reelection last January, citing problems with online hate. Atwin won the riding for the Green Party in 2019, but crossed aisles to the Liberals ahead of the 2021 election, which she also won.

Myles has won two Junos in his 20-year career and received the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medals in 2022.

He beat Conservative candidate Brian MacDonald, who was a Progressive Conservative MLA for the Fredericton West-Hanwell from 2010 to 2018.

Myles also beat Dominic Cardy, leader of the newly formed Canadian Future Party, who was seeking to gain the first seat for his group. Cardy previously represented the Fredericton West-Hanwell riding from 2018 to 2022 as a Progressive Conservative MLA. He was also the leader of the New Brunswick NDP from 2011 to 2017.

Saint John-Kennebecasis

CTV News has declared that Liberal candidate Wayne Long, who won the Saint John-Kennebecasis (previously Saint John-Rothesay) riding in 2015, will return to Parliament as the region’s MP.

Long previously implied he would not seek reelection in 2025, but reconsidered when Mark Carney won the Liberal leadership.

Long beat Conservative candidate Melissa Young, who previously served as the CEO and registrar of Skilled Trades Ontario and was also the executive director of the National Electrical Trade Council
