RCMP Southwest Traffic Services Yarmouth says it arrested two drivers after separate incidents on New Year’s Eve in Yarmouth County, N.S.
Officers were conducting a checkpoint at the intersection of Highway 3 and Raynardton Road when a Jeep Compass was observed approaching eastbound at a high rate of speed on Dec. 31 around 8:15 p.m., according to a news release from RCMP.
Police say the officers at the checkpoint signaled for the vehicle to stop but it continued to drive eastbound and failed to stop at the checkpoint, narrowly missing an RCMP officer who was standing on the road and dealing with another driver at the time.
The officers located the Jeep Compass moments later at the end of a dead-end road, says the release.
The driver, a 27-year-old man from Carleton, was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle, flight from police, and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.
He was later released from custody with a first court appearance scheduled for March 3.
Later that same night around 12:30 a.m., another RCMP Southwest Traffic Services Yarmouth member says he was patrolling the Argyle area when he observed a Dodge Dakota driving at a very slow speed.
The member conducted a roadside stop where an Approved Screening Device (ASD) was used, and the driver failed, says police.
The 63-year-old man from Glenwood was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle and then provided breath samples that were more than double the legal limit.
He was released from custody and will have a first court appearance at a later date.
Police say anyone convicted of impaired driving will receive a criminal record, lose their licence for one year, and face a minimum fine of $1,000.
