A former New Brunswick schoolteacher has been sentenced to 14 years for sex offences spanning 55 years.
The RCMP first received a complaint in August 2021 about sexual assaults involving a teacher at École Champlain elementary in Moncton, N.B., in 1987 and 1988.
Following an investigation, police arrested Paul J. Maillet of Notre-Dame, N.B., in January 2022. Maillet, who was 75 at the time, was charged with a number of offences, including:
- invitation to sexual touching
- sexual assault
- acts of gross indecency
Police continued to investigate and identified a total of 13 victims between the years of 1967 and 2022.
In October 2022, Maillet appeared back in provincial court in Moncton, where an additional 14 charges were laid, bringing the total number of charges against him to 29. Those charges included:
- sexual assault
- gross indecency
- child luring
- sexual interference
- invitation to sexual touching
- possession of child pornography
Maillet appeared in Moncton provincial court on Tuesday, where police say he was sentenced to 14 years in prison. He was ordered to register with the National Sex Offender Registry. Following Maillet’s release from prison, he will need to abide by conditions set by the court.
The RCMP says further details about the incidents are not available due to a publication ban.
