Inquest into psychiatric patient’s death begins in Moncton, N.B.

A coroner’s inquest into the death of a New Brunswick woman at a psychiatric facility started Monday.

A coroner’s inquest into the death of a New Brunswick woman got underway Monday afternoon with jury selection.

Deputy Chief Coroner Emily Caissy and a jury of five will hear more about the death of Kaytlyn Hemsworth during the next several days.

The 19-year-old died in the psychiatric facility of the Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont University Hospital Centre in Moncton, N.B., on April 11, 2023.

The inquest, which is being conducted in French, will hear all evidence relating to Hemsworth’s death. At the end of the process the jury will have the opportunity to make recommendations to prevents similar deaths in the future.

The inquest is scheduled for the entire week, but Caissy said she expects it will finish on Wednesday.

Members of Hemsworth’s family were in attendance with a translator helping relay the information being discussed.
