A Kingsclear First Nation man is facing several charges – including attempted murder – after he allegedly opened fire on New Brunswick RCMP, hitting one officer in the head.
According to the RCMP, officers responded to a reported assault at a Tomahawk Avenue residence in Kingsclear First Nation around 12:35 p.m. on Tuesday. A 34-year-old man, who was known to police, was found outside the home.
The suspect allegedly threatened police and barricaded himself inside the residence with a weapon.
Several specialized policing services – including the emergency response team, police dog services, the Fredericton Police Force, crisis negotiation team and explosive disposal unit – attended the scene.
Police say the man fire dozens of gunshots at officers through the windows of the home. One of the bullets struck an emergency response team member in the head, but the member was wearing a ballistic helmet and did not suffer any serious injuries.
The suspect also hit seven RCMP vehicles. Police say they did not return fire at any point.
The man allegedly refused to surrender and police eventually used tear gas on the home, which forced the suspect and a 50-year-old woman to exit the building where they were arrested.
The woman was later released from custody.
Michael Sabattis appeared in court on Wednesday and was charged with:
- attempted murder
- aggravated assault
- discharge of a firearm with intent
- assault
- uttering threats
Sabattis was remanded into custody and will return to court at a later date.
Police say the incident did not meet the criteria for an Alert Ready, but several nearby residences were evacuated. Other residents in the community were asked to shelter in place.
“This was an extremely dangerous situation that had the potential to result in significant injuries and even loss of life,” said Sgt. Stephane Esculier of the West District RCMP in a news release.
The investigation is ongoing.
