Elite junior hockey is returning to the K.C. Irving Regional Centre in Bathurst, N.B.
The city will welcome their new team, the Chaleur Lightning of the Maritime Junior Hockey League in the fall, said a Friday news release.
The team was formerly known as the Fredericton Riverview Ford Red Wings. That team’s last game will be played at the Grant Harvey Arena on Saturday.
Roger Shannon, the Lightning’s president and governor, said he was honoured to partner with the city of Bathurst.
“Having been part of the Titan organization for many years, at different times, I know the passion that comes from fans in the Chaleur Region and the Acadian Peninsula when it comes to their hockey,” Shannon said. “We cannot wait to get started.”
The team’s logo, a lightning bolt over waves, is a nod to NHL player Sean Couturier, who played for the Chaleur region’s Peewee and Bantam AAA Lightning.
“The road to the K.C. Irving Regional Centre bears his name, a recognition of the impact Sean has had in the Chaleur Region,” said Shannon. “So, it’s rather befitting the name he represented while in Peewee and Bantam AAA returns to this rink.”
The Mayor of Bathurst Kim Chamberlain said the Lightning’s arrival “ensures the continued presence of high-caliber hockey at the K.C. Irving Regional Centre.” Chamberlain said Shannon was “solid” new tenant with enthusiasm and extensive hockey knowledge that fans will embrace.
“We definitely have a solid market, with fans ready to support this new adventure.”
