N.B. government spending $7.1M on three new towers to improve cell coverage

The New Brunswick government is spending $7.1 million on three new towers to improve cellular coverage in the province.

The new towers will be located in the Restigouche, Acadian Peninsula and capital region service commissions, serving people along routes 11, 17, 160 and 3, according to a news release from the province.

“These new tower sites are in locations where tower infrastructure is currently unavailable,” said Finance and Treasury Board Minister René Legacy in a news release. “The new towers will facilitate new partnerships with cellular service providers in an effort to continue to close cellular gaps in areas of the province that need it.”

The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure will own the towers once they are complete. The finished towers will provide infrastructure for cellular service providers to attach their equipment.

“We want to see more carriers come on board to enhance service in every corner of this province, and today’s announcement will move us closer to that goal,” said Environment and Climate Change Minister Gilles LePage.

The province is currently conducting a study on cellular connectivity on New Brunswick highways and collector routes.
