A 51-year-old man has been sentenced to two years in prison for firing a weapon near people in Basswood Ridge, N.B., three years ago.

St. Stephen RCMP responded to a report that a firearm had been discharged at two people near a residence in the community on April 24, 2022.

No one was injured.

Police say the suspect fled the scene before officers arrived.

Bryan Sheppard was arrested two days later and charged with discharging a firearm with intent.

Sheppard was found guilty of discharging a firearm while being reckless as to the life or safety of another person during his trial in December 2024.

Sheppard was sentenced on Wednesday to two years and one month in a federal penitentiary. He is also prohibited from owning weapons for 10 years.
