Two New Brunswick universities are getting more than $1 million to create student housing.

Two New Brunswick universities are getting thousands of dollars from the provincial government to help address housing needs on their campuses.

The province announced over $1.1M to support student housing plans at both the Universite de Moncton and the University of New Brunswick on Monday.

“This funding will help the Université de Moncton and UNB determine their student housing needs and costs related to constructing and operating new residences,” said Jean-Claude D’Amours, acting minister of Post-secondary Education, Training and Labour.

UNB is set to receive $555,565 with UdeM getting the remaining $568,900 for a feasibility study, conceptual design work, costing and planning.

The idea is that this study will help make a plan for housing needs on all of their campuses across the province.

President and vice-chancellor for UdeM, Denis Prud’homme, says an in-depth analysis will be done on its Edmundston, Moncton and Shippagan campuses with a goal of proposing affordable solutions.

The University of New Brunswick will look into ways to create viable and affordable student housing in both Fredericton and Saint John according to UNB president and vice-chancellor Paul J. Mazerolle.

“Thanks to the support from the Government of New Brunswick, we will be able to complete a student housing feasibility study. The study will include a comprehensive analysis of market demand, cost analysis as well as exploration of innovative design options that cater to the evolving needs of our student body and incorporate sustainable building practices,” Mazerolle told CTV News.

“The insights gained from the study will be instrumental in guiding our decision-making process to ensure future residence projects in Fredericton and Saint John are viable and best meet the needs of our students.”
