According to the Moncton Fire Department, crews responded to the Fancy Pokket Bakery Corporation on St. George Boulevard just before 6 p.m.

A fire had apparently broken out in the assembly area where pita breads were being made.

Moncton Fire Department Platoon Chief Paul Bruens said there was extensive water and smoke damage throughout the building.

“It was a significant fire because of the monetary loss to the owners,” said Bruens. ““There is a sprinkler system above the assembly area that activated and over 20 sprinkler heads were melted so it caused a significant water flow.”

Bruens said there was heavy smoke inside and firefighters had a very reduced visibility.

“They couldn’t see anything when they entered the structure. So that was challenging as well because of all the equipment on the floor and the assembly area,” said Bruens.

Bruens said 18 firefighters were on scene for over two hours.

All of the employees evacuated safely.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Fancy Pokket president & CEO Mike Timani told CTV News he is in the United States dealing with the fire situation, but plans to be back at the bakery on Wednesday.

According to the company’s website, Fancy Pokket is Atlantic Canada’s largest producer of pitas, flatbreads, wraps and bagels.

They celebrated 35 years in business this past June.
