Police in Cape Breton are asking for the public’s help with an investigation into reports of shots fired in Sydney Mines, N.S.
The Cape Breton Regional Police responded to a report that a person heard gunshots around 5:45 a.m. on March 22 in the area of Cottage Street.
The force says officers found no initial evidence a shooting had taken place and deemed there was no risk to public safety.
“Through ongoing investigation, police have conducted a neighbourhood canvas, spoke with several people and reviewed multiple sources of video, including one that shows flashes of light, believed to be gun shots, coming from a vehicle,” reads a news release from the Cape Breton Regional Police.
“There are no identifying details in any of the video and police did not locate any damage to any vehicles or property on Cottage Street.”
Police later received a report of damage to a residence on a different street in the area, but say they are unable to confirm if it is connected to the March 22 incident.
“At this time, there is no further evidence to confirm shots were fired at any particular location and police are treating this as an isolated incident,” reads the release.
According to police, members of the community have indicated there may be additional information about the incident that has yet to be shared with them.
Police say they are also investigating an incident of shots fired from a dark-coloured hatchback with a loud muffler between 4:30 a.m. and 5 a.m. on March 10 on Cottage Street. The vehicle was also seen travelling on Pitt Street, towards Legatto Street.
Police have not identified the vehicle or persons, but say it was an isolated incident.
Cape Breton Regional Police is asking anyone who saw or heard anything connected to either incident, or who has video not already viewed, to call 902-563-5151 or make an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers.
