The former Bloomfield School in Halifax, which caught fire earlier this year, is officially slated to face the wrecking ball.
According to the Halifax Regional Municipality’s permit tracking system, a demolition permit was approved for the Agricola Street abandoned building on March 11. The permit description says the work will involve the “demolition and removal of abandoned school.”
Earlier this week, Mayor Andy Fillmore told CTV News Atlantic the demolition work is expected to be finished by the end of the summer.
The Bloomfield School, which has been abandoned since 2014, caught fire on Feb. 16. Crews brought it under control but not before one building on the lot was destroyed.
Later that month workers tore down unstable walls at the site.
Developer BANC bought the property from the municipality for nearly $22 million in 2020. That purchase included a five-year construction start date deadline.
According to ViewPoint, a Nova Scotia-based real estate brokerage, the Bloomfield School property has an assessed value of $5,406,400 for 2025.
